That's because word problems test two skills at the same time:

  • Understanding what the problem is actually asking.
  • Turning that information into mathematics.

The solution isn't to read faster. It's to read more selectively.

The key idea Don't try to understand every sentence equally. Find the quantities, identify the relationship between them, and determine what the question wants you to calculate.

A 5-Step Method for SAT Math Word Problems

Identify what the question is asking

Before calculating anything, find the exact quantity you need. Is the question asking for a price, percentage, distance, rate, value of x, area, probability, or something else?

Knowing the target prevents you from doing unnecessary calculations.

Extract the important numbers

SAT questions often include more information than you immediately need. Highlight or mentally isolate the numbers and variables connected to the quantity you're looking for.

Translate words into mathematical relationships

Certain phrases should immediately suggest mathematical operations.

  • "of" often means multiplication.
  • "per" usually represents a rate or division.
  • "increased by" means addition.
  • "decreased by" means subtraction.
  • "percent of" means converting the percentage to a decimal and multiplying.
  • "at a constant rate" often suggests a linear relationship.

Write the equation before solving

One of the easiest ways to make mistakes is to start calculating while you're still interpreting the problem.

First create the equation. Then solve it.

Check whether your answer makes sense

Before selecting an answer, ask yourself whether the result is reasonable. A quick estimate can catch many mistakes without requiring you to solve the entire problem again.

Example 1: Percentage Word Problem

Question

A jacket originally costs $80. During a sale, the price is reduced by 25%. What is the sale price?

Step 1: Find what is being asked

We need the price after the discount.

Step 2: Calculate the discount

25% of $80 = 0.25 × 80 = $20.

Step 3: Subtract the discount

$80 − $20 = $60.

A common mistake is choosing $20 because that's the number you calculated first. But $20 is the discount, not the final price.

Example 2: Rate Problem

Question

A car travels 180 miles in 3 hours at a constant speed. At the same rate, how far will it travel in 5 hours?

Find the rate first

180 ÷ 3 = 60 miles per hour.

Use the rate for 5 hours

60 × 5 = 300 miles.

Notice that the question becomes much simpler when you reduce the paragraph to one relationship:

distance = rate × time

Example 3: Turning Words Into an Equation

Question

A gym charges a one-time registration fee of $30 plus $20 per month. If a member has paid $150 in total, for how many months has the member used the gym?

Let m represent the number of months.

The relationship becomes:

30 + 20m = 150

Subtract 30:

20m = 120

Divide by 20:

m = 6

Don't Automatically Use Every Number

One common SAT trap is including a number simply because it appears in the question.

Before using a number, ask:

  • Does this number affect the quantity I'm trying to find?
  • What relationship does it have with the other values?
  • Would the problem still make sense if I ignored it?

This habit can save both time and unnecessary calculations.

Use Answer Choices Strategically

Multiple-choice answers are not just possible solutions — they can also provide useful information.

When algebra becomes messy, you may sometimes be able to:

  • Eliminate answers that are clearly too large or too small.
  • Substitute answer choices into the original condition.
  • Estimate before calculating precisely.
  • Work backward from the possible answers.

You don't get extra points for using the longest method. The goal is to arrive at the correct answer efficiently.
